What are your favorite gifts to give or receive on Father’s Day? My parents have always said that handmade gifts from the kids are their favorites. Over the years we have made dozens of handmade cards, macaroni art, hand-painted pottery, and other cute art projects. My own kids are a little obsessed with making gifts, and their favorite gift to make is a Sharpie Mug.
Learn how easy they are to make with our tutorial below!

How to Make a Sharpie Mug in 3 Easy Steps
1. Buy Your Supplies
- A Blank Mug: Cheap dollar store mugs are prefect. They have a lower gloss finish than more expensive mugs so the paint wont chip as easily over time.
- Oil-based Paint Pens: You can find these at most art supplies stores. Make sure they are oil-based. Water-based will wash right off!
- Rubbing Alcohol: This is optional, but if you make a mistake on your drawing you can use rubbing alcohol on a q-tip or paper towel to wipe it off. 🙂
2. Draw Your Awesome Designs on the Mug
Make sure your mug is clean and dry. Follow the instructions on the paint pen to get it started. It’s a good idea to test it on another surface until you get it going. Sometimes a lot of paint will come out at once. Make a mistake? Erase it with some rubbing alcohol.
3. Bake it!
Set your oven to 250 degrees and bake the mug for 2 hours. According to Destination Decoration, baking your mug at this temperature for a longer period of time keeps the colors from changing in the heat and allows the paint to set well so it doesn’t chip when the mugs are washed. After 2 hours, let it cool and your gift is done!
